Is The Portland Yoga Project’s Yoga Teacher Training certified with Yoga Alliance?
Over the years, YA has served more as an arbiter and gatekeeper than a leader in how to make the whole yoga industry a safer and more professional environment for more people. While YA has taken some steps over the last several years to redirect their role, especially in the wake of the widespread allegations of abuse across the global yoga community, we still do not at this time find the cost of being a YA member as equal to the level of accountability that we as an entire industry need.
When we train and hire teachers, we take the time and care to get to know someone, not only in their teaching but as a human. We look for expertise, experience, professionalism, ethical conduct, and community involvement. Our yoga teacher trainings include learning yoga philosophy through a lens of decolonization and anti-racism. We educate our trainees not only in safer movement practices, but in safer use of language, space, and personal conduct. We continue to evolve our business practices to prioritize education, ethical conduct, community care, and legal standards. These are the things that matter most to us, and they are not currently required by YA.
