Behind the Scenes at PYP
Our upcoming increase in our class and membership rates (beginning September 1) is a reflection of our growing business, community, and vision. We are always engaged in the tension of increasing access to our classes and space to as many people as possible, while also running a successful business that can operate smoothly and compensate our employees fairly. It can be a tough balance to manage, and increasing our rates is something we do with careful consideration toward how it will impact our students.
We want to be transparent about how we make these decisions because we recognize that we are stewarding a community resource that is not only about offering individuals the best movement classes we possibly can, but is also about distributing all manner of resources—time, money, skill, creativity, connection, mutual aid—back out into our community. Here are just a few of the tangible ways in which we are using our resources as a business:
We have created three part time positions in the last year in collaboration with a few of our employees who expressed an interest in expanding their professional roles at PYP. Stephen provides feedback and support in his role as Barre Teacher Mentor. In her role as Community Outreach Ambassador, Victoria is developing relationships with other local orgs so that we can participate in our community from a position of mutual aid. Kelley is now managing our desk staff and making sure that our daily studio operations are running smoothly and our desk staff is well supported. Stephen, Victoria, and Kelley have poured their hearts and souls into PYP over the years. We could not be more excited to benefit from their respective knowledge, skills, and passion as we continue to expand our community and staff.
In addition to these new positions we continue to offer our free monthly classes, which is an opportunity for our teachers to connect with specific members of our community in safer spaces that foster connection, ease, and joy for people who might find our typical classes to be inaccessible. Under Victoria’s leadership we look forward to increasing our outreach by spreading the word about these classes and increasing our community offerings in general.
And, of course, we are looking forward to opening our second location at the end of this year, which will add another 20+ classes to our schedule and give our teachers more opportunities to do what they love—teach! Both Kelley and Stephen are integral to making this expansion successful as they work with our teaching and desk staff.
All of these things contribute to your experience as a student. You are a part of a growing community that values diversity, creativity, and connection. Your investment in PYP starts with your own personal practice, but it extends outward to your community in myriad ways. When you visit PYP, you aren’t just getting a great class, you are participating in a community that is doing our collective best to integrate our values to support and uplift each other.
